I am a advocate for good therapy, no - make that very good therapy.

But there is so much bad therapy out there that I had to write about it, and its awful impact on ordinary people. When I looked for any public information on the harm that bad psychological therapy does to people, if you like, any public warnings, there was none to be found. Yet just like potent medicine in the hands of a good doctor, it must come with warnings because potent therapy delivered badly makes people worse, not better. In medicine, there are the kooky and bad treatments that you can’t access from your doctor because scientific scrutiny has mostly weeded them out. You can still get kooky and bad medicines, if you go outside of a registered practitioner and are game enough. Like candle therapy for blocked ears, mutation blocking herbs for testicular cancer, and hydroxychloroquine for COVID 19.

But in our profession of psychology, science is used badly and is mostly not even understood by the psychologists. This means that registered practitioners are often doing kooky and bad psychology. They simply don’t know how or why it works. Maybe it is not their fault? Afterall, they never studied psychological therapy in a way required by the AHPRA Psychology Board, our key body that oversees and regulates competencies.

So what are you getting? What is your child getting? Good Psych or Bad Psych, and would you know the difference?
